Capers too much for McMaster

Written by Trinity Western University sports information office

cbu-msoccer-action09-shayneLANGLEY, B.C. (CIS) – Shayne Hollis scored twice to lead the AUS champion Cape Breton Capers to their first-ever win at the CIS men’s soccer championships as they defeated

the McMaster Marauders 4-1 in the second consolation match of the CIS men’s soccer championship at Trinity Western University, Friday afternoon.

The second year fullback from Baileys Bay Bermuda scored the first goal of the match, in the seventh minute, and the fourth, in the 69th minute, to help the Capers improve to 1-3 all-time in CIS championship play. CBU lost both its duel in 2007.

“We were able to take advantage of our opportunities,” said Capers coach Robbie Chiasson, who admitted there was a lot more pressure in the team’s quarter-final matchup the night before against the host Trinity Western Spartans.

First year midfielder Andrew Rigby, from Nottingham, Eng and second year forward Keishen Bean from Sandys, Bermuda scored it the 35th minute and the 62nd minute to give the Capers their four goals on the night, while McMaster second year striker Mark Reilly from Hamilton scored, what will be the only goal of the tournament for the Marauders, in the 23rd minute.

With no change in their formation or offensive philosophy, the Capers capitalized on their chances.
“It was big for us to get that first goal,” the coach said. “We were able to play a little bit more today.”

The Capers will now play the University of Victoria Vikes in tomorrow’s consolation championship match. The fifth place match will kick off at 1 p.m. PST at Trinity Western University.

Keepers Chris Toumidis of Stoney Creek, Ont. with one save and Claudio Siciliano shared the win, while Matt Grant of Brampton made four saves in the loss.

The match was called in the 76th minute after an injury to McMasters Chinomnso (Jimmy) Nwamandi from Brampton required that he not be moved until an ambulance arrived to transport him to the hospital.

McMaster finishes the competition in a tie for seventh position with an 0-2 record.
